A fifth gear bolted on — the transitional five-speed before the true 5G-TRONIC.
The 722.5 (W5A030) takes the hydraulic 4G-TRONIC and adds an electrically controlled overdrive fifth in a separate rear housing. Developed for the R129 SL and offered as an extra-cost option from about 1990 on the 300 SL-24, SL 280 and SL 320, then on the W140 S 280/S 320 and selected W124/W210 six-cylinder cars, it cut motorway revs without a full redesign — at the cost of two housings and two control systems. Torque capacity stays around 294 N·m, so it was never paired with V8s.
It was a stopgap: from 1996 the integrated, electronically shifted 722.6 5G-TRONIC replaced both the 722.5 and the remaining 4G-TRONIC applications.
