Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster (R199) (R199)

McLaren built the carbon fibre, AMG built the engine, and the R199 SLR Roadster removed the roof to let the supercharged V8's side-exit exhaust note reach its audience without a windscreen's interference — at least in Speedster form.

Mercedes-Benz offered the SLR McLaren as a Roadster on the R199 chassis from 2007, with a speed-activated automatic fabric hood and the same 626 PS supercharged 5.4-liter V8 that propelled the C199 coupé to over 330 km/h. The Roadster's carbon-fibre body and active rear spoiler maintained the SLR's dramatic proportions; the subsequent SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster and the roofless, windscreen-less SLR Stirling Moss Speedster pushed the concept to its extremes.

Produced until 2010, the R199 SLR McLaren Roadster completed the SLR program's body-style range — an open super-GT as audacious as the coupé that defined Mercedes-Benz's early-twenty-first-century performance ambitions.
