When Mercedes-Benz finally gave the W124 a folding roof, the result was one of the most refined four-seat cabriolets of the 1990s — an open E-Class built with the same over-engineered rigidity that had already made the sedan a benchmark.
Unveiled in 1991 and produced from 1992 on the A124 chassis, the cabriolet combined an available electrohydraulic soft top, automatic rollover protection, multi-link rear suspension and four- or six-cylinder petrol engines. Sindelfingen reinforced the structure extensively to preserve the closed-car feel; inside, leather, wood, and wind-deflector engineering made long-distance open-air touring genuinely comfortable.
Production ran from 1992 to 1997, and Mercedes-Benz built 33,952 examples of the A124 E-Class Cabriolet — a substantial run for a premium four-seat convertible that bridged the W124 era and the CLK cabriolets that followed.

- The 300 CE-24 Cabriolet debuted at the Frankfurt motor show.
- More than 1,000 newly designed parts reinforced the pillarless body after removal of the fixed roof.
- An automatically deploying rear rollover bar supplemented the reinforced windscreen frame.
- Optional electrohydraulic actuation folded the soft top beneath a flush metal cover.
