Mercedes-Benz had been building estates for nearly half a century and electric cars for well over a decade. In July 2025 it finally built one car that was both.

The X174 is the CLA Shooting Brake, and it is the brand’s first battery-electric station wagon — a car whose existence says more about the flexibility of MMA than any press slide could. It is the same 4,720 mm length and 2,790 mm wheelbase as the four-door coupé, with the same 800-volt architecture, the same rear-mounted permanently excited synchronous motor derived from the VISION EQXX, and the same two-speed transmission whose second ratio does the autobahn work. What changes is the roof: it runs flat to a near-vertical tailgate, lifting boot volume to 455 liters, or 1,290 with the rear seats folded, on top of the 101-liter frunk the electric cars gained.

The aerodynamic penalty of that roofline is small — the CLA 250+ Shooting Brake still returns 768 km on the WLTP cycle against 792 for the saloon. Order books opened in November 2025, the 71 kWh CLA 250 followed in February 2026, and in July 2026 Mercedes-AMG added a 500 kW estate with three axial-flux motors. It is not sold in North America.

Year by year.

A short history so far: premiere in July 2025, market launch in November, and an electric AMG estate a year later.

  1. 2025
    • July: the CLA Shooting Brake is unveiled as the first battery-electric estate from Mercedes-Benz, four months after the four-door coupé and thirteen years after the CLS Shooting Brake introduced the body style to the brand.
    • 455 liters of boot space rising to 1,290 with the rear bench folded, plus the 101-liter frunk — the first on a Mercedes-Benz since the 130 (W 23) of the 1930s. The fixed panoramic roof is standard.
    • November: order books open in Europe. The Shooting Brake is not offered in North America.
  2. 2026
    • January: the CLA takes European Car of the Year 2026, a title shared across the whole third-generation family.
    • February: the CLA 250 with EQ Technology joins with a 71 kWh pack and 652 km WLTP.
    • Spring: a factory-fitted DC-DC converter becomes available so the 800-volt cars can also use 400-volt DC chargers.
    • 9 July: Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+ Shooting Brake — 500 kW, 1,759 N·m, 0–100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and more than 640 km of WLTP range from a 94 kWh pack.
