Mercedes-Benz’s longest-running V8 — from cast iron to Alusil, 4.5 liters to 5.6, and every SL from the 450 to the 560.
Introduced in 1971 as a longer-stroke sibling of the M116, the M117 debuted in the W108/W109 280 SE 4.5 and 300 SEL 4.5 for North America, then powered the R107 450 SL, the C107 450 SLC and the W116 450 SE/SEL. Bosch continuous injection, one cam per bank, two valves per cylinder. In 1978 the cast-iron block gave way to Alusil alloy; displacement grew to 5.0 liters for the 500 SL/SEC and finally to 5,547 cc for the 560 — badged 5.6 in honor of round numbers.
For nearly two decades the M117 was Stuttgart’s big eight, culminating in the high-compression European 560 at 299 PS. AMG’s four-valve heads on late 5.6s previewed the DOHC M119 that replaced it from 1989; the last M117s left the line in the early 1990s.
