One of none.

A private client asked for the fastest road car on earth. Lotec answered with carbon fibre, a 1,000 PS Mercedes V8 and a number nobody ever proved.

In August 2024, a silver wedge rolled onto the lawn at Pebble Beach and parked between the Aston Martin Bulldog and the Vector W8. The programme called it a 1991 Lotec C1000. Most histories date the finished car to 1995. Both descriptions point to the same object: the only C1000 ever built.

It took third in the late wedge-prototype class, twenty-nine years after completion. That small bronze was the first official verdict the car had ever earned. Its famous performance figures were not verdicts at all. They were promises.

Chapter I · 1962–1995

The blank cheque.

Lotec began in 1962 around German racer and engineer Kurt Lotterschmid. By the end of that decade his small operation was building competition cars; in the 1980s it added ferocious road-car conversions for Porsche, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. It was exactly the kind of workshop to accept a request too strange for a production line.

Its apprenticeship was racing. The BMW-powered Lotec 681 of 1981 was a Group 6 sports prototype, followed by further endurance machinery and specialist engineering. Lotec understood low mass, large wings and engines working far beyond showroom tune before the C1000 had a name.

Around 1990, a bilingual C1000 brochure put a price of DM 1,495,000 on a proposed run of as many as twenty-five cars. Prototypes appeared at Geneva and Frankfurt in 1991. Behind that public programme sat the private brief later accounts agree on: a client from the United Arab Emirates wanted the fastest privately owned road car in the world.

The paper trail is too thin to turn repetition into fact. Modern histories describe four years of development; the surviving 2006 Barrett-Jackson docket instead says the car was conceived in 1994. It says the client first contracted Mercedes-Benz, while later profiles make Lotec the direct contractor. Retellings even disagree over the patron's identity. The responsible history is the narrow one: an Emirati commission, Lotec engineering, Mercedes power, one completed car.

Chapter II · Carbon / 1,000

C meant carbon.

The badge was a specification. C1000: C for the carbon-fibre structure and body, 1000 for the power target. It was not a model family or a promise of production. The name described this car and no other.

A carbon chassis and composite skin held quoted mass to 1,080 kg, barely more than a contemporary Mazda MX-5 and roughly half the weight of a modern 1,000-horsepower hypercar. The dimensions were pure prototype: 4.3 metres long, two metres wide and only 1.15 metres high.

Its Group C proportions came from the endurance paddock rather than the styling studio: a wraparound canopy, four small oval lamps, triangular side intakes, a flat tail and a rear wing wide enough to become part of the silhouette. The surfaces were soft, but the plan view was a blunt arrow.

Inside, luxury stopped at red leather. The two-seat cockpit exposed the carbon tub, used a small suede-rim wheel, a metal lever and a handful of analogue instruments. The speedometer was marked to 400 km/h. Everything else was structure.

Chapter III · 5,547 cc

The old V8, doubled.

Behind the cabin sat the last place anyone expected to find a thousand-horsepower future: the M117, Mercedes-Benz's single-cam road-car V8. In its largest production form it displaced 5,547 cc and powered the 560-generation S-Class and SL. Lotec kept the capacity and changed the atmosphere.

The C1000 is often described as carrying a road-going Sauber C9 engine. The numbers say otherwise. The Le Mans-winning Sauber-Mercedes C9 used a 4,973 cc M119-derived racing V8; the C1000's auction specification identifies a 5.6-litre Mercedes unit. The link is ancestry and Group C expertise, not a literal engine transplant.

Two Garrett turbochargers transformed the old eight, but the surviving figures describe more than one state of tune. A 1994 report gave 854 PS and roughly 990 Nm; later publicity made 1,000 PS the headline. No independent dynamometer certificate for either figure has surfaced. Contemporary and auction descriptions also say the engine could run on a mixture of unleaded petrol and aviation fuel.

All of it went to the rear wheels through a five-speed Hewland manual. AP IMSA racing brakes supplied the opposite force. There was no all-wheel drive, no dual-clutch launch program and no electronic torque choreography — only a racing transmission, two enormous rear tyres and the driver's right foot.

Carbon and one thousand. The name left nowhere to hide: if the structure was not exotic and the output did not reach four figures, the project had failed before it moved.

Chapter IV · Claimed, not timed

The fastest car that never ran.

The numbers changed with the tune and the telling. A 1994 report gave 0–200 km/h in 9.8 seconds and 375 km/h. Later sales material promised two even faster sprints: 0–60 mph in 3.2 seconds and 0–125 mph in 8.08. None appears in an independent instrumented test.

Then came the number that made the C1000 immortal: 268 mph — 431 km/h. It appears in the 2006 auction docket and almost every retelling since. Lotterschmid later recalled closed-road runs between 374 and 390 km/h, but no surviving timing record or recognised authority confirms those speeds either.

For scale, the McLaren F1 reached 386.4 km/h under independent observation in 1998, itself an extraordinary exercise in tyres, gearing and stability. Lotec's claim sat another 44.6 km/h beyond that verified mark. Power alone could not make it true.

The distinction matters. The C1000 may have had the power and gearing for a theoretical 431 km/h, but it did not set a record. Its top speed belongs to legend, not the timing sheets — a calculated possibility repeated until it became the car's identity.

Chapter V · 2006–2026

From bill of sale to Pebble.

In January 2006 the C1000 crossed the block at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale sale, no reserve and on a bill of sale only. The auction house's surviving page confirms it sold; period reporting gives 1,600 miles and a result of $247,500 — a tiny fraction of the multi-million-dollar construction figures attached to it.

Then the car receded again. Technician John Hooper kept it alive during years in North Carolina. After collector Jonathan Weizman acquired it, Curated in Miami recommissioned the machine with Hooper and fabricator Sean Robinson. With no parts catalog and almost nothing standard, the central problem was also the advantage: everything was custom.

The car returned to public judgment at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. In a class led by the Aston Martin Bulldog and Vector W8, the official result placed the Lotec third in class. The lawn did what the autobahn never had: it gave the C1000 a verified number.

From June 2025 to April 2026 it appeared at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Totally Awesome! Cars and Culture of the '80s and '90s, among the machines that made the last two decades of the twentieth century feel limitless. On 11 April 2026, Curated announced its sale to an unnamed European caretaker. The price and present location remain private.

Epilogue

A claim made physical.

The C1000 was not a Mercedes-Benz production model. It was an independent Lotec one-off built around Mercedes power, sold without a conventional VIN and wrapped in the reflected glory of Group C. That distinction does not diminish it. It explains it.

It never proved 431 km/h. It proved something stranger: years before the Veyron, a small workshop and one client's appetite could put four-digit power into a carbon road car and make the world repeat the number for three decades. Records require timing equipment. Myths need only one.
