The W240 was the chassis that revived Maybach as a Mercedes-Benz brand — an ultra-luxury saloon built to take on Rolls-Royce and Bentley at the very top of the market.
The 57 was the shorter of the two Maybachs: 5,728 mm long on a 3,390 mm wheelbase, and the one an owner might plausibly drive himself. Underneath sat a heavily reworked S-Class platform, a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V12, AirMatic Dual Control air suspension and separate climate systems front and rear. The 57 S of 2005 brought the AMG-built 6.0-litre engine with 612 PS, rode 13 mm lower on 20-inch wheels, and moved the car’s emphasis from the rear compartment towards the driver.
The long-wheelbase Maybach 62 ran alongside it on the V240, 437 mm longer and unambiguously chauffeur-driven. Volume was never the point: 1,771 of the 3,321 Maybachs built were 57s. The main series line closed in 2012, while the Public Archive records final facelifted 57 S production through January 2013.

From the original 57 to the 57 S, Zeppelin and final facelift — the short history of the driver’s Maybach.
- 2003
- The Maybach 57 reached the US with the 543-hp 5.5-litre twin-turbo M285 V12, AIRMATIC Dual Control suspension, electrohydraulic Sensotronic brakes and five-speed automatic.
- At 5,728 mm long, the 57 was the shorter, owner-driver-oriented 240-series body; its standard 3,390 mm wheelbase distinguishes it from the V240 Maybach 62.
- 2006
- The 57 S joined with an AMG-built 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 producing 612 PS and 1,000 N·m, plus firmer suspension, 20-inch wheels, a lower ride height and model-specific grille and exhaust trim.
- 2009
- The limited Zeppelin package added a 640 PS engine tune, two-tone paint, dark-red tail lamps, California beige leather, piano lacquer trim and silver champagne flutes; total Zeppelin production across 57 and 62 was capped at 100.
- 2011
- The US-market facelift brought a revised grille, bumper, hood and mirrors, LED running lights and updated rear treatment.
- The 57 S rose to 620 hp in US specification and moved to the facelift 240.077 chassis; rear-seat and infotainment equipment was also revised.
- 2012
- Final US model year after Daimler announced the Maybach marque would be discontinued; production ended at Sindelfingen in December.
- 2013
- The Public Archive records final 240.077 production through January, after the main series line had closed.
