Between Stuttgart volume models and Nürburg eight-cylinder luxury sat the Mannheim — a mid-range Mercedes-Benz family that gave buyers a substantial six-cylinder chassis without the cost and complexity of the firm's largest offerings.
The Mannheim 350 and 380 variants shared a coherent engineering approach, offering coachbuilders a versatile platform for saloons, cabriolets and touring bodies in the early 1930s. The name recalled the city where Mercedes-Benz maintained important production facilities, and the line anchored the middle of a catalogue that was rapidly diversifying by size and price.
Production ran from 1929 to 1934, with 1,876 examples built. The Mannheim's role as a dependable mid-range choice would eventually give way to newer Typ designations, but it remains a key chapter in how Mercedes-Benz structured its pre-war model range.
