Gullwing doors on a production Mercedes-Benz — the C197 SLS AMG revived a gesture last seen on the W198 300 SL, but this time with a hand-built AMG V8 and aluminum spaceframe chassis designed entirely in Affalterbach.

Launched in 2010, the SLS AMG paired a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter M159 V8 — producing up to 631 PS in Black Series form — with a rear-mounted transaxle and upward-swinging doors that required no structural compromise thanks to the rigid aluminum monocoque. The long bonnet, side-exit exhausts, and motorsport-derived suspension made the SLS unmistakable; it was conceived as both a modern 300 SL homage and a farewell to naturally aspirated AMG V8 engineering.

Mercedes-AMG built the C197 SLS AMG Coupé from 2010 to 2014 as a limited-production halo car — the gullwing that proved AMG could create an entirely original icon rather than merely enhance an existing model line.
