Mercedes-Benz’s first production V8 — alloy heads, Bosch injection, and the 3.5 that defined the early SL.

Introduced in 1969 for the W109 300 SEL 3.5 and soon the R107 350 SL, the M116 was a 90° SOHC V8 with two valves per cylinder, initially 3,499 cc (92 × 65.8 mm) and later stretched to 3.8 and 4.2 liters. It shared architecture with the longer-stroke M117 and powered S-Class, SL and SLC models through the 1970s and 1980s, including the C107 350 SLC and late 420 SL.

By the mid-1980s Alusil blocks and catalytic calibrations kept it current, but the four-valve M119 was waiting in the wings. The last M116s left the W126 and R107 lines at the turn of the 1990s as the DOHC eights took over.
