The first forfour was a smart in badge only: built by Mitsubishi at NedCar in the Netherlands on the Colt platform, engine at the front, driving the front wheels.
Offered from 2004 with 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5-liter petrol engines and a 1.5-liter CDI diesel, it also came in BRABUS form with a 177 PS turbocharged four. It was the only conventionally engineered car smart ever sold.
It lost money on every example and was canceled in 2006 after barely two years. The forfour name returned in 2014 on the Renault-based W453.
