Mercedes-Benz M178 V8 engine

The dry-sump sibling of the M177 — same 4.0-liter hot-V biturbo, built for the AMG GT.

Sharing the 83 × 92 mm, 3,982 cc closed-deck aluminum architecture and BorgWarner turbos in the valley, the M178 differs mainly in dry-sump lubrication and calibration for the front-mid-engined GT. Outputs started near 340 kW / 600 N·m for the base GT and rose through GT S, GT C and GT R tunes.

It remains the signature engine of the C190/R190 AMG GT family, while the wet-sump M177 covers saloons, SUVs and the later GT 4-Door. Together they replaced the naturally aspirated M152/M159 and the larger M157 biturbo in Affalterbach’s roadmap.
