While the W463 dressed the G-Class for the boulevard, the W461 kept the Geländewagen honest — a stripped, differential-locking workhorse for armies, utilities and anyone who actually needed to leave the road.

Built from May 1992 through December 2001 on the professional 461 chassis, it offered short and long wheelbase wagons, pickups and vans with four-cylinder petrol and diesel power, including a later turbodiesel.

Mercedes-Benz manufactured 5,160 examples of the 461 chassis in this period — a fraction of civilian W463 volume, but the line that kept the G-Class’s off-road credentials intact.

The professional G’s engine changes and naming transition through the catalogued W461 range.

  1. 1992
    • The W461 replaced the W460 for professional and non-civilian customers.
    • The launch range retained the 230 GE petrol engine.
    • The OM602-powered 290 GD replaced the former 240 GD and 300 GD diesels.
  2. 1993
    • The passenger-car naming convention changed 230 GE to G 230 and 290 GD to G 290 Diesel for the 1994 model range.
  3. 1996
    • Production ended for the G 230 petrol variants.
  4. 1997
    • The 290 GD Turbodiesel replaced the naturally aspirated 290 GD in September.
    • The turbocharged OM602 raised output to 88 kW and torque to 280 N·m.
    • A water-cooled intercooler preserved the W461’s original front bumper and approach angle.
  5. 2001
    • The 290 GD Turbodiesel adopted the G 290 Turbodiesel name for its final year.
    • Production of the W461 variants catalogued here ended in December.
