The W414 Vaneo was Mercedes-Benz's compact MPV for the early 2000s — a front-wheel-drive people carrier built to offer practical family transport with a three-pointed star on the grille.
Based on the first-generation A-Class platform, the Vaneo used sliding rear side doors, a high roof, and flexible seating in a short footprint suited to European cities. Petrol and CDI diesel four-cylinder engines provided the power, and the emphasis throughout was on entry-level Mercedes-Benz ownership for families who needed space rather than status.
Pre-series production began in September 2001, standard production followed in November or December depending on the version, and the final Vaneo was built in July 2005. The W414 was a pragmatic product — never a design icon, but a useful one — and the five Public Archive types total 55,469 vehicles.

Launch, equipment editions and the short production life of the A-Class-based Vaneo.
- 2001
- Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Vaneo at the Frankfurt motor show; production began at Ludwigsfelde late in the year on an enlarged version of the W168 sandwich-floor platform.
- 2002
- Full-market launch offered 1.6- and 1.9-litre M166 petrol engines and two outputs of the 1.7-litre OM668 CDI, with twin sliding rear doors and removable rear seating.
- Trend, Family and Ambiente equipment concepts grouped trim for commercial, family and leisure use; transmission choice included a five-speed manual or automated clutch system.
- 2003
- The Spring special edition bundled ten frequently ordered options on the stronger petrol and diesel models.
- A richer luxury package upgraded exterior trim and cabin materials, but did not bring a mechanical facelift.
- 2005
- Production ended in July without a direct successor; the Vaneo received no major facelift during its run.
