Mercedes-Benz had never built a car quite so vertically packaged — the T245 B-Class stacked its engine, transmission, and passengers in a sandwich platform that maximised interior space within a footprint barely larger than the A-Class hatchback.

Launched in 2005, the first-generation B-Class on the T245 chassis used the innovative sandwich-floor architecture pioneered by the W168 A-Class, with the engine sliding beneath the floor in a frontal collision to protect occupants. Tall roof, flat floor, and a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines made the B-Class a compact MPV for buyers who wanted Mercedes-Benz quality without SUV dimensions; the B 200 CDI and B 200 Turbo offered frugal diesel and surprising petrol performance respectively.

Volume production ran from 2005 to 2011, while the 214-car B-Class F-CELL pilot fleet continued through July 2012. The T245 established Mercedes-Benz in the compact monospace segment as a practical, upright alternative to the A-Class hatchback.

2005
- The B-Class launched as a five-door compact sports tourer using the A-Class sandwich-floor layout with a longer wheelbase and larger cabin.
2008
- The facelift introduced a revised grille, bumpers, headlamps, rear lamps, wheel designs and upgraded cabin materials.
- The B 150 and B 170 gained optional ECO start/stop as BlueEFFICIENCY models.
- The B 170 NGT introduced bivalent petrol and natural-gas operation with gas tanks packaged beneath the passenger floor.
- Adaptive flashing brake lamps and crash-activated interior lighting became standard safety equipment.
2010
- The B-Class F-CELL entered small-series production with a 100 kW electric motor, lithium-ion battery and hydrogen fuel-cell system.
2011
- Volume production of the combustion-engine T245 ended as the second-generation B-Class entered production; the F-CELL pilot fleet continued in small numbers.
2012
- Production of the 214-car B-Class F-CELL pilot fleet concluded in July.
