Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class 4-Door Coupé (C219)

The C219 CLS was Mercedes-Benz's first four-door coupé — a saloon-derived shape that traded conventional three-box proportions for a lowered roofline and frameless side glass, and in doing so invented a segment.

Based on the E-Class platform but styled as something entirely distinct, the first-generation CLS offered six-cylinder and V8 petrol engines, diesel alternatives, and AMG models including the CLS 55 AMG and CLS 63 AMG. The concept was simple: the presence of an S-Class, the footprint of an E-Class, and a silhouette unlike either.

Produced from 2004 to 2010, the C219 CLS established a body style Mercedes-Benz — and eventually its rivals — would return to again and again. It was proof that the executive saloon could be reinterpreted without losing credibility.

The first four-door coupé, its V8 powertrain changeover, facelift and final Grand Edition.

  1. 2004
    • The CLS launched in Europe as a four-door coupé with frameless side glass and a range headed by the supercharged CLS 55 AMG.
  2. 2006
    • The naturally aspirated 5.5-litre M273 CLS 500 replaced the 5.0-litre M113 model.
    • The 514 PS M156-powered CLS 63 AMG replaced the supercharged CLS 55 AMG and gained the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC transmission.
  3. 2008
    • The facelift introduced a two-louvre grille, larger mirrors with arrow-shaped LED indicators, LED rear lamps and trapezoidal exhaust outlets.
    • A three-spoke steering wheel, white instrument dials and the NTG 2.5 telematics generation updated the cabin.
    • The CLS 280 joined the European range as the new V6 entry model.
  4. 2009
    • The Grand Edition combined designo magno platinum paint, titanium-grey 18-inch AMG wheels and dark-housed bi-xenon headlamps.
    • The CLS 280 and CLS 320 CDI were renamed CLS 300 and CLS 350 CDI without mechanical changes.
  5. 2010
    • Production of the first-generation CLS ended in summer 2010.
