Type 722.1 (W4B025) is a hydraulically controlled four-speed automatic rated to 245 N·m, fitted to the W114/W115, W116, R107/C107 and W123 ranges. It gave four- and six-cylinder saloons, coupés and estates a smoother alternative to the three-speed 722.0.

Dozens of version codes (.100 through .122) match specific engines and axles. The later 4G-TRONIC (722.3/722.4) superseded it from 1979 onward.
