Three speeds and a torque converter — Mercedes-Benz’s early W3 automatic for the SL and S-Class.
The 722.0 family (W3A040 / W3B050) is a hydraulically controlled three-speed automatic used in the early R107/C107 SL and SLC and the W116 S-Class. Classifications name the maximum input torque: roughly 392 N·m for the W3A040 and 490 N·m for the stronger W3B050.
It was the direct predecessor of the four-speed 722.1 and 722.2 units and the later 4G-TRONIC, and by the early 1980s four-speed automatics had largely replaced it in new passenger cars.
