Mercedes-Benz Executive Sedan (W142)

Executive six-cylinder comfort for the last years of peace — the Typ 320 and Typ 340 occupied the tier below the supercharged flagships, offering long-wheelbase saloons and cabriolets for buyers who wanted stature without a Kompressor badge.

Mercedes-Benz built the W142 around smooth inline-six engines and formal Sindelfingen coachwork: closed saloons for chauffeured travel, open variants for warmer climates, and — as the 1940s arrived — Kübel and military adaptations of the same chassis. The six-cylinder line bridged the gap between the volume four-cylinder cars and the hand-built luxury of the Großer Mercedes.

Some 7,017 cars were built on the W142 chassis between 1937 and 1942. The Typ 320 and 340 were the last substantial executive Mercedes of the pre-war peacetime catalogue — built in meaningful numbers, then pressed into harder service as war reshaped the factory's priorities.
