Launched in 2005, the first-generation B-Class on the T245 chassis used the innovative sandwich-floor architecture pioneered by the W168 A-Class, with the engine sliding beneath the floor in a frontal collision to protect occupants. Tall roof, flat floor, and a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines made the B-Class a compact MPV for buyers who wanted Mercedes-Benz quality without SUV dimensions; the B 200 CDI and B 200 Turbo offered frugal diesel and surprising petrol performance respectively.
Built from 2005 to 2011, the T245 B-Class established Mercedes-Benz in the compact monospace segment — a practical, upright alternative to the A-Class hatchback that prioritised interior volume above all else.
