The second A-Class kept the sandwich floor and offered two distinct bodies: the five-door W169 hatchback and the shorter-windowed three-door C169 coupé.

Launched in 2004, the W169 used M266 petrol fours and OM640 CDI diesels with a five- or six-speed manual or the AUTOTRONIC continuously variable transmission, and in A 200 TURBO form made 193 PS from 2.0 liters.

It was the last A-Class to use the sandwich concept; the W176 of 2012 replaced it with a conventional low-slung hatchback.

The second A-Class from launch through its BlueEFFICIENCY facelift and 2012 finale.

  1. 2004
    • The five-door W169 launched with sandwich-floor construction and selective-damping suspension; the related three-door model used the separate C169 code.
  2. 2005
    • The 193 PS A 200 Turbo joined the range as the W169 performance flagship.
  3. 2008
    • The facelift brought reshaped headlamps, bumpers, grille and rear lamps together with revised interior materials and controls.
    • BlueEFFICIENCY versions introduced aerodynamic and rolling-resistance measures, while the A 150 and A 170 could be ordered with ECO start/stop.
    • Adaptive flashing brake lamps and crash-activated interior lighting became standard safety equipment.
  4. 2012
    • W169 production ended on 19 April after the final A 180 CDI left the Rastatt plant.
