The W203 C-Class brought a more expressive design and improved packaging to Mercedes-Benz's compact executive range as the new century opened — softer lines, but the same engineering seriousness beneath.

The range expanded to include Kompressor and CGI four-cylinder models, CDI diesels, and AMG performance variants including the C 32 AMG, C 55 AMG, and the diesel C 30 CDI AMG. A sport coupé on CL203 and an estate on S203 extended the W203 platform beyond the core saloon, giving buyers body-style choice without leaving the C-Class family.

Mercedes-Benz built 1,529,905 W203 C-Class saloons between 2000 and 2007 — the second-generation C-Class that carried the compact executive formula into the modern era before the W204 arrived.

AMG, 4MATIC, new engine families and the 2005-model-year facelift — the changes that separate W203 C-Classes.

  1. 2001
    • The W203 reached the US as C 240 and C 320 sedans with standard front and side curtain airbags, ESP and the new three-link front suspension.
  2. 2002
    • The supercharged C 32 AMG arrived with 349 hp, AMG Speedshift automatic, larger brakes, firmer suspension and model-specific bodywork.
    • The C 230 Kompressor joined the US sedan range, while M271 four-cylinder engines began replacing the earlier M111 family in European models.
  3. 2003
    • C 240 and C 320 4MATIC models added permanent all-wheel drive; 4MATIC cars use distinct front suspension, driveline and transmission hardware.
  4. 2005
    • The facelift brought clear-lens headlamps, wider-track front styling, revised bumpers and sills, a completely redesigned dashboard with chronometer-style instruments and improved seats and switchgear.
    • DIRECT CONTROL revised axle bearings, steering ratio, rear anti-roll bar and manual shift action; nanotechnology clearcoat and NECK-PRO active front head restraints were added.
    • The C 55 AMG replaced the C 32 with a 362-hp 5.4-litre M113 V8, an extended nose, CLK-derived front structure and larger brakes.
  5. 2006
    • New M272 V6 models replaced the C 230, C 240 and C 320 with C 230, C 280 and C 350 designations; rear-drive V6 cars gained 7G-Tronic while 4MATIC retained a five-speed automatic.
  6. 2007
    • Final US model year for the W203 sedan before the W204; the late range consisted of M272 V6 cars and the C 55 AMG.
