Mercedes-Benz’s first three-row SUV was built in Alabama and aimed squarely at the American family.
The X164 stretched the W164 M-Class unibody to seat seven, with permanent 4MATIC, a two-speed transfer case, a low range and optional AIRMATIC air suspension. The range covered the GL 320 and GL 350 CDI, the GL 420 CDI, and the M273-powered GL 450 and GL 500, with a 5.5-liter GL 550 for North America.
Facelifted in 2009, it ran to 2012 and established the full-size format that became the GLS.
