The second fortwo grew by nineteen centimeters — just enough to satisfy American crash regulation and finally put a smart on sale in the United States.
Built at Hambach from November 2006, it used a 1.0-liter Mitsubishi-designed three-cylinder in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms alongside an 800 cc OM660 CDI diesel that was, for a time, the lowest-CO₂ car on sale anywhere. A battery-electric smart fortwo electric drive followed in 2009.
The contrasting tridion safety cell remained the visual signature; production ran to 2014.

- 2007
- The second-generation fortwo launched with a longer body, improved crash structure and a new five-speed automated manual transmission.
- 2008
- The fortwo entered the United States with a 70 hp 1.0-litre petrol engine in pure, passion coupé and passion cabriolet forms.
- 2011
- A first facelift brought a redesigned dashboard, upgraded materials, new audio and navigation systems, LED daytime running lamps and additional colour combinations.
- Refined 45 kW and 52 kW petrol engines reduced European-cycle carbon-dioxide emissions below 100 g/km.
- 2012
- A second facelift moved the smart emblem into an enlarged grille and added new front and rear aprons, side skirts and interior trim.
- Series production of the third-generation fortwo electric drive began in June with a 55 kW motor and a 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery.
- 2015
- US sales of the W451 ended as the successor fortwo arrived for the 2016 model year.
