Mercedes-Benz had never built a coupé quite like the CLA — compact, front-wheel-drive, and styled to look like a scaled-down CLS, the C117 brought four-door-coupé drama to a price point the S-Class could never reach.

Launched in 2013, the first-generation CLA Coupé rode on the MFA platform shared with the A-Class and B-Class, offering turbocharged petrol and diesel four-cylinders and, in AMG form, a turbocharged four-cylinder with genuine supercar-embarrassing acceleration. The frameless-door pillarless glasshouse and plunging roofline defined the silhouette; inside, the first mass-market Mercedes with the widescreen cockpit previewed the brand's interior direction for a decade.

The C117 CLA Coupé opened an entirely new segment for Mercedes-Benz — a compact four-door coupé that traded traditional rear-drive prestige for design impact and brought the three-pointed star to younger buyers in numbers the C-Class coupé alone could not achieve.

US launch, AMG power increase and the 2017 facelift — the material changes across the first CLA generation.

  1. 2014
    • The CLA launched in the US as CLA 250 and CLA 45 AMG, bringing the front-drive MFA platform and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to the four-door coupé.
    • COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and ATTENTION ASSIST were standard; 4MATIC was available on the CLA 250 and standard on the AMG.
  2. 2016
    • Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 output increased from 355 to 375 hp, with shorter third-through-seventh gear ratios and a revised Dynamic Select system.
  3. 2017
    • The facelift brought new front and rear bumpers, flush-integrated exhaust finishers, a black diamond grille and optional LED High Performance headlamps.
    • New upholstery and trim, chrome-plated controls and an available 8-inch display refreshed the cabin; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration became available.
    • Active Brake Assist replaced COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS as standard equipment.
  4. 2019
    • The final C117 model year closed the first-generation CLA run before the C118 replacement.
