The W639 was the second-generation Vito and V-Class — a larger, more refined platform that carried Mercedes-Benz's mid-size van and luxury MPV program from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
Front-wheel and all-wheel-drive variants covered commercial Vito panel vans and passenger Viano/V-Class models, with CDI diesel engines from four-cylinder units through V6 oil-burners and petrol V6 options for selected markets. The W639 improved crash safety, ride quality, and equipment levels over the W638 it replaced.
Produced from 2003 to 2014, the W639 served as both commercial backbone and executive shuttle. It was the platform that proved Mercedes-Benz could build a van worthy of the S-Class owner's second car.

Year by year.
Rear-wheel drive, 4x4 and the OM651 facelift — the changes across the long-running W639 Vito and Viano.
- 2003
- The W639 replaced the front-drive W638 with rear-wheel drive, a longitudinal powertrain and a much broader choice of two wheelbases, three body lengths and two roof heights.
- Passenger versions adopted the Viano name while commercial models remained Vito; launch engines included OM646 CDI fours and M112 V6 petrols with six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions.
- 2004
- The Vito 123 and corresponding Viano 3.5 added the 3.7-litre M112 V6 petrol option.
- Permanent 4MATIC became available on selected CDI passenger and van models, using 4ETS in place of mechanical differential locks.
- 2008
- The Vito 126 replaced earlier petrol V6 variants with the 3.5-litre M272, identifiable in the model table by the 126 designation.
- 2010
- A major facelift brought revised headlamps, grille, bumpers and tail lamps, upgraded cabin materials and controls, and substantial noise and ride refinements.
- New OM651 four-cylinder CDI engines created Vito 110/113/116 CDI models; the Vito 122 CDI used the OM642 V6, and BlueEFFICIENCY measures reduced consumption.
- 2014
- W639 production ended in July before the W447 Vito and V-Class replacement.
