The four-speed automatic option for the early Geländewagen.

The 720.1 is a hydraulically controlled four-speed automatic offered alongside the 711.2 manual in the W460 G-Class. It gave the 230 G, 280 GE and related models a torque-converter alternative for road and light off-road use while retaining the transfer case and locking differentials.

It belongs to Mercedes-Benz’s pre-722 passenger and commercial automatic line and was eventually superseded by the 4G-TRONIC (including the W4A028 G-Class calibration) and later the 5G-TRONIC in G-Class applications.
