Mercedes-AMG ONE (R50) (R50)

Formula 1 for the road, taken literally — the R50 is the only production car ever built around an actual Grand Prix power unit, the 1.6-liter V6 turbo hybrid that carried Mercedes to the 2016 constructors’ title.

The mid-mounted V6 drives the rear wheels through a bespoke seven-speed automated manual with a four-disc carbon clutch, and is joined by four electric motors: 90 kW on the turbocharger shaft to erase lag and harvest exhaust heat, 120 kW on the crankshaft, and a 120 kW motor for each front wheel. Together they make 782 kW (1,063 PS) and an all-wheel-drive car that will also creep 18 km on battery alone. The body is carbon fibre over a monocoque that carries the engine and gearbox as structural members, the doors open upwards like a butterfly’s, the rear wheels steer, and in the two circuit modes the front fender louvres open, the two-part rear wing extends and the whole car drops onto its push-rod suspension. Making a race engine survive the road cost it revs and compression: 11,000 rpm instead of 14,000, a strengthened crankcase, port injection added alongside direct, an electrically heated catalyst, and a rebuild every 50,000 km that AMG says can run to €850,000.

Mercedes-AMG built 275 cars between August 2022 and 2025 at roughly €2.75 million apiece before tax, and turned away four times that many orders. Engines came from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains at Brixworth and final assembly from Multimatic at Coventry — the R50 was never sold in the United States, where homologation would have blunted it.

Year by year.

From the Project ONE show car of 2017 to the end of the 275-car run.

  1. 2017
    • Project ONE show car unveiled at the IAA in Frankfurt on 11 September by Lewis Hamilton and Dieter Zetsche.
    • The run is announced as 275 cars, with first deliveries then planned for 2019.
  2. 2021
    • A near-production car appears at IAA Mobility in Munich; homologating the Formula 1 driveline and its software delays the launch repeatedly.
  3. 2022
    • Production version revealed on 1 June, and confirmed as not being sold in the United States.
    • Series production begins in August — engines from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains at Brixworth, final assembly by Multimatic at Coventry.
    • Maro Engel laps the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:35.183 in October, taking the production-car record on a partly damp track.
    • Production-car records follow at the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit (1:56.096), Hockenheim (1:38.563) and the Red Bull Ring (1:26.846).
    • The first customer car is handed over at the end of December.
