Its party trick is a suspension that can bounce the body up and down to work a stuck wheel free of sand — one item on a list that also includes a dedicated car wash mode.
Produced at Tuscaloosa since October 2019, the X167 uses the M256 mild-hybrid straight-six and the M176 and M177 V8s, with the OM656 diesel in Europe, all through 9G-TRONIC and with E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL on the top versions.
It also carries the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 — renamed GLS 680 with the 2027 update — the first Maybach-badged sport utility vehicle.

- All-new GLS launched for the US model year with a 60 mm-longer wheelbase, standard three-row seating, MBUX and available E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL.
- GLS 450 introduced the 48-volt M256 inline-six; GLS 580 paired the M176 V8 with EQ Boost.
- 2021
- AMG GLS 63 arrived with a 450 kW (603 hp) M177 V8, 48-volt starter-generator, active roll stabilization and fully variable 4MATIC+.
- Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 became the first Maybach SUV, replacing the third row with a luxury rear compartment and adding powered running boards and a Maybach drive program.
- 2024
- Facelift brought a larger four-louvre grille, revised bumpers and tail-lamp graphics, new paint and trim choices and expanded standard equipment.
- Latest MBUX added revised displays and an Off-Road mode with transparent-hood camera view; AMG suspension software was retuned.
- 2026
- Mercedes-AMG presented the updated GLS 63 globally in calendar 2026; the M177 Evo model reaches the United States for model year 2027 with a flat-plane crankshaft, second-generation 48-volt ISG, redesigned AMG front end and new LED signature.
- Mercedes-Maybach revised and renamed the flagship GLS 680 for model year 2027, alongside updated six- and eight-cylinder GLS variants.
